The Uncertainty Principleposted on 20 December 2013 | posted in Information
We live in a world of change and uncertainty, yet people put all their eggs in the same basket. When these are broken, they cry and become miserable. Why do we refuse to admit that here nothing is certain, nothing is stable and life does not give any guarantee to anyone? Seasons change, time changes, night is followed by day, youth by old age, good health by illnesses, yet we are attached to things.
Does any wave remain stable for even one moment? Look at the clouds: akin to them, the mind, the heart, the body and everything else is constantly changing. The way people live shows that they do not expect things to change and if they do, they always hope that it will change for the best. Of course, this is rarely the case. There is nothing wrong in hoping; in fact, it is very human. But getting obsessed with one's hopes leads to misery when things do not turn out to be as expected. This is why it is good to hope for the best while expecting the worst.
Being optimistic does not mean being unrealistic and refusing to see the possibility that things may not be always bright. It simply means that whatever happens is for the best. Such an attitude is a sign of great intelligence, for how many people can embrace death with pleasure, with a smile and realise that it is for the best, especially if someone is young and has all the material comfort of life! But whether we realise it or not, such things do occur frequently.
Anything can happen at any moment. Even what people consider as impossible can take place. We often say, "I never expected this! It is so strange that it happened." We must understand that we do not know what lies waiting in the womb of nature to manifest in the future. When a person passes away, many people say, "I did not expect him to pass away so soon." This implies the person had an idea about the approximate time of death. But how can one, in a world of change and uncertainty, entertain the idea that death cannot happen at any time? Why not at the next very moment?
People refuse to accept that life is uncertain, that there is no guarantee of any tomorrow. They think that it is difficult or impossible to live from moment to moment. This is why we say that life is so uncertain. Or if there is anything that is certain, it is change. Then how should one face life, knowing that at any moment anything can change and everything is uncertain?
First of all, one should realise that man's worth is limited to his own effort. He should be content with doing his best in anything and relinquish all hopes for any fruit in the future. He must choose to do things that will make him rise above himself. Normally, man is confined to his own mind-created world. Only by rising or transcending himself, he attains to the fullness of life. Therefore man must discriminate and take actions that will lead him there. And on the way, if there is any change, there will be no regrets because one will have done his best. Each action, each moment is the door to the fullness of life.
One need not worry about completing anything that one undertakes. The most essential thing is total involvement in each moment and action. This, however, does not imply that one can leave any work incomplete and run away. It simply means that whatever one does should be the reward itself, without expecting anything in return. It should be like heaven is all the way to heaven. Then every moment and each deed becomes a door to the fullness of life. Do not run after the mirage, for it exists not. Do not expect heaven with in changing world. Heaven is in being, not in the external world of change.
Time, events, growth and change wait for no man. They keep on going, therefore follow them and float with them. This is what is meant by surrender. Watch the mind and the heart, see how they change rapidly. And most important of all, realise who is the watcher – an unchanging principle unaffected by anything. Save for consciousness, nothing is certain, nothing is stable. Therefore realise that ye are consciousness!
Anything can happen at any moment.
Even what people consider as impossible can take place.
Why do we refuse to admit that here nothing is certain, nothing
is stable and life does not give any guarantee to anyone?
